How to connect Java/JDBC with Connection Manager
Posted in 2013
Khan asked how a Java/JDBC app should connect to a Connection Manager SLA when the sqlhosts entry 'oltp' is a group (with members oltp1/oltp2 on different ports), so no single port could be put in the JDBC URL. Answers: either define the group on the client (e.g. Windows registry/setnet32, per IBM technote swg21447622), or let the driver read a sqlhosts file directly, e.g. jdbc:informix-sqli:/stores:informixserver=oltp;user=xxx;password=yyy;SQLH_TYPE=FILE;SQLH_FILE=/informix/etc/sqlhosts. This is documented in the Informix JDBC Driver Programmer's Guide. Khan's follow-up about whether the sqlhosts file must be on the client wasn't answered in the thread.

Hello All, Can someone share any link, which could specify how to connect a java (JDBC) application to the connection manager. Actually, I am running two redundant connection manager having 2 SLA's in each CM file. Below you will find the details of the configuration. Now, I wanted to know that if I wanted to connection my JAVA/JDBC application with OLTP SLA then what port I should mention in the JDBC URL? I am trying to connect it using following URL, but I am not sure port I should mention, because ports are mentioned for oltp1 & oltp2, not for oltp. jdbc:informix-sqli://hostname:???/stores:informixserver=oltp Can someone post a correct JDBC URL for me? #========================================================== # Connection Manager 1 Config File #========================================================== # Connection Manager name NAME osk_cmsm_1 # Connection Manager message file LOGFILE /home/informix/osk_cmsm_1.log CM_TIMEOUT 60 #default value is 60 DEBUG 1 EVENT_TIMEOUT 30 #default value is 60 SECONDARY_EVENT_TIMEOUT 30 # BODY # Connection Unit 1 CLUSTER ha_1 { INFORMIXSERVER osktest1_tcp SLA oltp1 DBSERVERS=primary SLA reports1 DBSERVERS=primary FOC ORDER=HDR,RSS TIMEOUT=5 RETRY=3 } #========================================================== # Connection Manager 2 Config File #========================================================== # Connection Manager name NAME osk_cmsm_2 # Connection Manager message file LOGFILE /home/informix/osk_cmsm_2.log CM_TIMEOUT 60 #default value is 60 DEBUG 1 EVENT_TIMEOUT 30 #default value is 60 SECONDARY_EVENT_TIMEOUT 30 # BODY # Connection Unit 1 CLUSTER ha_2 { INFORMIXSERVER osktest1_tcp SLA oltp2 DBSERVERS=primary SLA reports2 DBSERVERS=primary FOC ORDER=HDR,RSS TIMEOUT=5 RETRY=3 } #================================================================= # entries in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file for CM-1 & CM-2 ( to make CM redundant) #================================================================= oltp group - - c=0 oltp1 onsoctcp hostname oltp1 g=oltp #entry to SLA1 in CM-1 oltp2 onsoctcp hostname oltp2 g=oltp #entry to SLA1 in CM-2 reports group - - c=0 reports1 onsoctcp hostname reports1 g=reports #entry to SLA1 in CM-1 reports2 onsoctcp hostname reports2 g=reports #entry to SLA1 in CM-2 ================================================================ # entries in /etc/services file for CM-1 & CM-2 (redundant CMs) ================================================================ oltp1 61570/tcp #entry for SLA1 in CM-1 oltp2 61571/tcp #entry for SLA1 in CM-2 reports1 61572/tcp #entry for SLA2 in CM-1 reports2 61573/tcp #entry for SLA2 in CM-2 I look forward for the support. What you want to do is setup an Informix group on the client that contains the 4 SLAs into two groups (one for oltp and one for reports). I'm not sure what your client OS is, but here is a tech article on how to set that up for windows clients: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21447622 -Justin -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of O KHAN Sent: Monday, July 08, 2013 7:07 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: How to connect Java/JDBC with Connection Manager [30770] Hello All, Can someone share any link, which could specify how to connect a java (JDBC) application to the connection manager. OK, so, oltp doesn't have a port because it is a group entry. You can define a group in the PC's registry and define an OLTP DSN on it, so you may be able to use JDBC using a DSN, but I do not know how to connect to a group using a JDBC connection string describing the connection directly. Perhaps it doesn't need a port number/name. Have you defined the group in the windows registry? If not, check out this link: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21447622 Art Art S. you can use SQLH_TYPE/SQLH_FILE in the URL to connect a group name "jdbc:informix-sqli/sotres:informixserver=oltp; user=foo;password=XXXX;SQLH_TYPE=FILE; SQLH_FILE=/informix/sqlhosts"

I see one example with HDR pair group name in http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.do cnotes.doc/uc7/jdbc_docnotes_3.00.html we can connect to any group name in SQLHOSTS file the same way. Thanks
Ahh, The JDBC Driver's Programming Guide was dropped from the PDF documentation set after 11.10, it no longer appears in the PDF doc sets or the11.50, 11.70, or 12.10 doc sets and I don't remember needing to use groups with Windows clients before 11.50. I do still see the section and page in the Information Center for v12.10! Thanks Jinming! Art Art S. Hi All, Here is how you can connect to a group using JDBC: *"jdbc:informix-sqli:/database_name:informixserver=group_xxxxx;* *user=xxx;password=YYY;SQLH_TYPE=FILE;* *SQLH_FILE=/informix/etc/sqlhosts"* where xxx is the username and YYY is the password. SQLH_FILE contains the path to the sqlhosts file. Thanks for the help, please also tell me that if this sqlhosts path is the file path at the client environment side (i.e. in my case windows path, where I need to create an identical sqlhosts) or it is the sqlhosts path at the Informix Server side i.e. $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts? jdbc:informix-sqli:/stores:informixserver=oltp;SQLH_TYPE=FILE;SQLH_FILE=??? Also, just to confirm that if I needed to create the sqlhosts file at the clients side (windows), then , I will still be needed to define groups using setnet32 or not? Thanks in advance for your help!
