What backup devices do you have? How large is your database? What is acceptable loss of data in the case of crash (none, I suppose). Of uptime? But generally, you do a level-0 backup once a week or more often, and level-1 and/or 2 backups once a day (during lull in processing - it is online backup, but it does consume quite some resources). Then you do continous backup of logs to tape (or mirrored disks). Use rather small log files, so that even in the case of total disk crash, you won't lose too much (logs go to tape when they fill up, or sooner if you manually switch to next one.) Also consider mirroring your disks (either using Informix or OS mechanisms - details of preffered setup depend on OS details, type of volume manager used etc). RAID will make data safer, but then you lose table partitioning optimizations etc. Another thing to keep in mind: if you are 7x24 shop, you will not have opportunity to reorganize your database. So, plan things like extent sizes, table partitioning, use of different dbspaces etc. most carefully.
