Hello everybody: I have a DB with very confidencial data i would like to encrypt. Do you know any Informix or third party tool for encrypting? I don't want to encrypt everything but specific fields. The scenario is: . Informix IDS 2000 . DataStage for extracting and updating information . Metacube for information analysis Any ideas or suggestions for doing it? thanks in advance, Luis Urcia

If your data is really confidential the first thing you'd need is a locked room and a finite number of users beeing able to access the data *inside the room*. That takes care against bugs in the keyboards and the reading of the screens. (Apropos, you'd need a metallic sheeting on all six walls too.) If you just want to secure against theft, any encrypting SCSI controller should do it. I'm sure there are such things. Other than that, here's another bit of advice: - Think carefully about *every* threat. Don't forget ex-employees, reading data off copper wires, bugs in the keyboards, bribed cleaning ladies looking for people that forgot to log off etc. There should be 30 to 40 items on your list. - Then go and ask in sci.crypt. This group is not only about encryption but about security as well. - Never think encryption is all you need to do. Practically the only thing it secures is your HD (when it's off) and a couple of copper cables. If you've got money to spend, ask a security company. www.counterpane.com is the first I can think of. (DISCLAIMER: I don't get anything out of this suggestion.) Greetings! Volker -- The early bird gets the worm. If you want something else for breakfast, get up later.
