14.10 installation blues
Posted in 2020
Snorri Bergmann installed 14.10 on RHEL 8 but onstat -V still showed the developer edition after running the ee_edition installer. Art Kagel said all installs are developer edition until a license pack is added. Andreas Legner suggested running the edition installer separately. Solved: Snorri had downloaded the FC2 edition pack for an FC3 engine; versions must match, so both must be reinstalled on upgrade.

Hi.
I'm trying to install 14.10 on RHEL 8. I have had numerous problems and have opened two cases with tech support.I'm posting here because they have been silent for a couple of days. :( 14.10 on RHEL 8 is supported according to this:
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/informix-server-system-requirements#linux
There seem to be some library inconsistencies, Informix requires libncurses.so.5, but libncurses.so.6 is shipped with RHEL 8. I had to create a softlink to resolve that.
But the major issue is this:
When installing (as root) I put the ee_edition.jar in the directory I was installing from and the edition installer logfile stated:
#Indicate whether the license agreement been accepted
#----------------------------------------------------
LICENSE_ACCEPTED=TRUE
#Installation Location
#---------------------
USER_INSTALL_DIR=/opt/informix
Summary
-------
Installation: Successful.
14 Successes
0 Warnings
0 NonFatalErrors
0 FatalErrors
But it is still running as the developer edition:
$ onstat -VIBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 14.10.FC3DE
Has anyone successfully installed 14.10 on RHEL 8? Any issues of this sort?
Thanks in advance,
-Snorri

All v14.10 installs are developer edition until you also install the license pack for another edition. There is only one installer in v14.10, only the license is k is different and enables th ed features and limits of the different editions.

Thanks Art. I have installed the ee_edition.jar file with success (like the log states), but the IDS still insists that I'm running DE. Regards, -Snorri ------------------------------ Snorri Bergmann ------------------------------
Call support. It sounds like it should be working. Art ------Original Message------ Thanks Art. Have you tried running the edition installer separately, with INFORMIXDIR env var being that of your 14.10.FC3 installation? java -jar ee_edition.jar -i console You're quoting 'edition installer log' above, but I'm not sure that really was the edition installer. ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------
Hi guys and thanks a lot. I now have successfully installed ee_edition! I had mistakenly downloaded 14.10.FC2 (not FC3) ee_edition.zip and that must be the reason it did not work. IMO the edition installer should give a warning if the versions don't match. Apparently, the edition installer MUST be the same version as the engine. I guess this means you have to re-install BOTH the engine and the license when upgrading. :( Thanks again, Cheers, -Snorri ------------------------------ Snorri Bergmann ------------------------------
Let's hope this last statement will have been true for 14.10.xC[1-3] only and you'd be able to keep your edition with future installations ;-) ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------
I had a PMR on this and was told this is the long term plan ------Original Message------ Let's hope this last statement will have been true for 14.10.xC[1-3] only and you'd be able to keep your edition with future installations ;-) ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------ #Informix
Snorri: I have not migrated any of my company's customers to IDS14.10.FCx yet but I have run into this "issue" on our development systems. We run IDS on Windows servers and I have found that it is also a requirement that the edition installer must be the same version as the engine and you do have to install both the new engine and the new license when upgrading. I am glad you were able to figure it out so quickly. ------------------------------ Best regards, Martin Graney Queues Enforth Development, Inc. Stoneham, MA 02148 ------------------------------
Hey Art - Did HCL/IBM publish this "new approach?" (outside of IIUG World). The README is very sparse. I wonder how many customers are tripping over trying to find IDS14 full product tar for other than Dev Edition. Is this a clean setup? I have done it a week ago and didn't have any issues. ------------------------------ Victor Tate ------------------------------
