I-NET PC problems/suggestions
Posted in 1993
Hi Netters, on my PC, I am now running I-NET PC 4.1 to access ONLINE databases on several UNIX hosts. I am using Q+E Database Editor as frontend under Windows 3.1, as well as an application developed under Wingz 1.1 with Hyperscript/Datalink. ODBC drivers are planned to be used soon to get MS-Access to link up to Informix and Oracle databases. Problems: 1) My system crashes when I try to run Wingz's datalink over remsql 4.1. I can only use the old remsql 2.10.something that came with datalink. Is there a way to get the old Wingz to cooperate with the new I-Net? 2) I have to start remsql before I enter Windows. That means I can only access databases on one host under one ID in any Windows session. In order to switch hosts (or even ID's) I have to exit Windows, and use setnet to change the parameters. Is there a way to get around this? It is necessary for me to have access to several databases on different hosts simultaneously. Creating synonyms under ONLINE/STAR on the host is NOT a valid option! Suggestions: 1) Could Informix change the somewhat antique DOS-TSR approach for PC-Host database connections (which uses up a lot of precious memory) to a more modern DLL solution under Windows? This would also probably solve problem no. 2 above. 2) Why does Informix only support a small number of networking software vendors? Are there plans to support "cheaper" solutions like WinSock or packet drivers?
