Some basic questions about Informix products
Posted in 1993
Hi everyone. I'm a new Informix user and have a few questions about different Informix products and where they fit in a production environment. (I did try the Informix books first but they do a very poor job in providing an overall outline of integration of different components.) Informix OnLine vs. Informix SE --------------------------------- My understanding was that OnLine is the database server on Unix (or other multiuser systems) and SE was the server on DOS platform, but that doesn't seem right. So what is the difference between these two products? Informix NET/Informix STAR --------------------------------- My understanding is that Informix STAR is what allows simultaneous access to multiple OnLine Servers. Whereas, Informix NET products allow access to remote servers (ie. Clients running on seperate machines from OnLine server). If this is right, then I have following questions 1> If I have only one Server and multiple client machines trying to connect to it then do I need to run STAR on the server machine or runing NET on client machines is enough? 2> If my server and clients are all Sun machines (SunOS 4.X) what Informix NET product will I be running on clients? (what is it called?) Informix 4GEN ---------------- I know that 4GEN is a suite of applications with ability to customize forms and the output of it if Informix 4GL code. Can I get some more info. about this product. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks. ------- Yogen Sanghani ICon Inc. (212)972-4266
