INITIALIZE 250 variable limit

After moving an application from 4.0 compiled 4.1 RDS I get the following error: INITIALIZE record_name.* TO NULL | | There are too many variables to VALIDATE or INITIALIZE in one | statement. | See error number -4436. In the above example, record_name is defined as like a table with about 300 columns. Informix support reports that there is a 250 variable limit on INITIALIZE in both 4.0 and 4.1 RDS and compiled, so it officially shouldn't be working (as it does). Anyway, this application is peppered with these statements and I will appreciate any suggestions.
