how many concurrent users access informix
Posted in 2012
User asked about concurrent user limits for Informix Innovator-C edition. Responses clarified that Innovator-C has no explicit session limit, but is constrained by memory (2GB max) and processor cores. The actual user limit depends on buffer sizing and shared memory allocation—each session consumes shared memory, so out-of-memory errors may occur when limits are reached.

Hi, Please give me the information about the how many concurrent users access(actual accessing instance) the Innovator-C Informix database. Is there any limitation in Innovator-C Informix edition. Thanks.
Hi, AFAIK Innovator C is not limited to a number of sessions or used harddisk space, just by memory (2GB max) and processor cores (and some functionality like PDQ etc.). In reality, the memory limitation might be a user limitation, depending on your buffer sizing (how much memory is left for shared memory <> buffers limits user sessions because each session consumes shared memory. If the limit is reached, you might get an out of memory problem when a new session is started). I am working on a project that will roll out several hundred Innovator-C edition servers around the world sharing data with two Enterprise Edition central servers. What do you mean by limitations? The only limits are the published resource limits and the fact that you cannot resell/redistribute Innovator Edition without a distributor agreement with IBM. Art Art S. Art, as a matter of interest, how are you managing to get Innovator-C servers "sharing data with two Enterprise Edition central servers" considering the unavailability of remote-database connectivity in Innovator-C?
Actually, Innovator-C can participate in a two node ER cluster with other Innovator-C nodes and it can have an HDR secondary, there is certainly remote connectivity built into Innovator-C like all Informix going back to SE v 2.10 (OK, it was an add-on prior to 4.01, but that's besides the point)! I've had an Innovator-C instance on my Linux server at home and connecting to it from Windows laptops since it was released. Actually, since the Innovator-C units are autonomous with only intermittent connectivity to the central servers the data sharing is via a proprietary, application specific, interface we are building for the client, but ER was a possibility early in the planning of the project. The only thing you cannot do remotely on Innovator-C is to have a distributed query accessing data in another server. Maybe that restriction is what is confusing you. However, with tools like my dbcopy utility that have the ability to open independent connections to multiple servers, this is easily worked around. That's old tech or me - I first coded it in 1994 to move data between a logged and an unlogged database. ;-) Art Art S.
