This is a great question that requires more than an e-mail response. I suggest you read the Informix manuals on this subject, specifically the Sysadmin Guide and the Performance Tuning Guide. (These two can be found on the Informix web-page if you cannot get the bound versions). My apologies for throwing it back at you but it will not be a lost effort as the better you understand the complete check-point process, the better you will understand what makes the rdbms 'tick'. have a nice day.
