Servicing multiple users

Informix gurus -- Kind of new at informix and would appreciate any info regarding client server: I'm constructing a 3 tiered client server architecture using informix (server on solaris, clients on NT) and was wondering: When multiple requests come in, can those requests be serviced concurrently, or does each one have to wait for it's turn (sort of like a queue)? Thanks, Frank
Hi Frank, Yes indeed, Informix is able to handle multiple concurrent requests/queries etc. You can find a (high level) description of how this is handled at: http://www.informix.com/informix/techbriefs/ids/ids_techbrief.htm#Dynamic The IDS techbrief provides some basic (and marketing oriented) materials that describe what is referred to as the Dynamic Scalable Architecture (DSA). DSA is the architecture at the heart of of the Informix Dynamic Server family, the most current version being IDS.2000 v 9.21. If you want a good book to sink your teeth you should grab yourself a copy of "The Informix Handbook" which is one of the most recent books on Informix. http://www1.fatbrain.com/asp/bookinfo/bookinfo.asp?theisbn=0130122475 It covers a huge wack of what you are going to need to know. Then if you are looking for good books that describe multi-tier architectures, in particular using JDBC, Java and XML, then you can find a list of good (IMO) books at: http://www.informix.com/idn-secure/Java/WebPages/resources/books.html HTH ben PS I don't get backhanders for recommending these books, but that is only because no one has offered yet ;-) "Fporc7ji" <fporc7ji@aol.com> wrote in message news:20000820094239.06056.00000543@ng-ce1.aol.com... > Informix gurus -- > > Kind of new at informix and would appreciate any info regarding client server: > I'm constructing a 3 tiered client server architecture using informix > (server on solaris, clients on NT) and was wondering: > > When multiple requests come in, can those requests be serviced concurrently, > or does each one have to wait for it's turn (sort of like a queue)? > > Thanks, > > Frank >
<!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en"> <html> Well, funny question: <p>If you have 3 tier like <p>Informix on Solaris <br>Middelware (e.g. Weblogic, tuxedo etc.) on Solaris <br>Clients on WinNT <p>You have a 3 tier architecture. And there you can make a pool of connections on the middelware server(s), so that one client do not have a direct connection to the Informix Database. <p>If your clients each make a connection to the Informix database then you only have a two-tier architecture. And the access to the data on the Informix Database is controlled by locks as usual on any database thus many can run at the same time. You have to note however that your client-application has to take locks into account - as always. <br>The clients can be serviced concurrently if you have the SMP hardware, otherwise it will just be regular resource sharing done by the OS. <br> <p>/Lars <p>Fporc7ji wrote: <blockquote TYPE=CITE>Informix gurus -- <p>Kind of new at informix and would appreciate any info regarding client server: <br>I'm constructing a 3 tiered client server architecture using informix <br>(server on solaris, clients on NT) and was wondering: <p>When multiple requests come in, can those requests be serviced concurrently, <br>or does each one have to wait for it's turn (sort of like a queue)? <p>Thanks, <p>Frank</blockquote> </html>
