Tool Helps to Protect and Extend Investments in Informix-4GL Code Base in Record Time New York - January 20, 1999 - SuperNova, leaders in enterprise application integration solutions, today announced the release of SuperNova/I4GL ExtenderTM, a comprehensive tool set for the modernization, extension and integration of existing Informix-4GL (I4GL) applications within distributed, heterogeneous environments. SuperNova/I4GL Extender is the only tool in the market that allows developers to easily superimpose any of the industry-standard graphical user interfaces such as Windows, Motif or a Web Browser on character-based Informix-4GL applications. Additionally, it provides the ability to add functionality to the new graphical application more quickly and easily than ever before. Once converted, the original application can also be migrated onto other platforms, such as Windows NT, which is not supported by native Informix-4GL applications. Most importantly, the SuperNova/I4GL Extender makes all of these improvements possible without requiring developers to rewrite the core business logic in existing Informix-4GL applications. "SuperNova/I4GL Extender promises Informix developers and users greater usability, productivity, portability and increased functionality," said Rob Hoogstraten, President and CEO of SuperNova. "For many organizations, rewriting their Informix-4GL applications is simply not feasible. Our solution is the only solution that offers them a range of options from GUI modernization to extension and integration; all while keeping the existing Informix-4GL code intact." Unique Features and Attributes of SuperNova/I4GL Extender: - The only tool that provides automatic GUI modernization support for Windows, Motif and Web Browsers, simultaneously. - The only tool that provides application extension and integration for Informix-4GL programs, without requiring any changes to the existing Informix-4GL . - The only tool that supports all server platforms currently supported by Informix-4GL. - The only tool that supports all major Unix and Windows platforms for both client and server deployment environment of extended applications. - Works with the existing Informix-4GL Compiler. - Uses intuitive Wizards for GUI and application conversion and extension. - Based on SuperNova's proven development tool and integration engine technologies. SuperNova/I4GL Extender is part of SuperNova's Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) Suite that helps IT organizations address their most demanding application and data integration challenges. SuperNova's EAI solutions reduce the complexities of integration by providing extensive platform, application interoperability and data integration, as well as providing a completely visual tool for integrating applications using component-based methodologies and framework. I'm tempted to add it to the FAQ but it's on hold until someone confirms the claims.. Not that I don't believe them but I need evidence since it seems to beat 4js (aka Informix D4GL). Anyone willing to add a section to the FAQ?? -- David Williams

Anyone willing to add a section to the FAQ?? Saw the full demo last Jan. and spoke at length with the tech rep who presented. SuperNova essentially incorporated someones (I think Querix's but I don't remember now) runner into their own 4GL/display engine. They then encourage one to develop new features for the apps using SuperNova objects rather than 4GL code, thereby locking one into their 4GL engine. SuperNova's language is certainly capable on its own but they add little in the way of graphics extension to Informix 4GL language itself. Also SuperNova is VERY pricey compared to D4GL or Querix, etc. Art S. Kagel
