Re: Assertion with Informix Version 5
Posted in 1995
Hi,
CREATE ASSERTION is not supported by the Informix Server products at
version 7.1x, let alone at version 5.0x, so there is no way it can be
supported by I4GL. CREATE ASSERTION is a feature of SQL-92 which Informix
has not yet implemented; it is not part of the base-level or entry-level
SQL-92 feature set. The supported SQL statements are documented in the
Informix Guide to SQL: Syntax manual (or, for version 5.0x, Informix Guide
to SQL: Reference).
Even if the Server products supported CREATE ASSERTION, the I4GL products
(at both version 4.1x and version 6.0x) would not support it directly
because they only understand the version 4.10 SQL syntax, which did not
include CREATE ASSERTION. But that also excludes other statements such as
CREATE TRIGGER and EXECUTE PROCEDURE too. For statements which aresupported by the Server products but not by I4GL, you can generally get
around the limitation by creating a string which contains the statement,
and then using PREPARE and EXECUTE to get the Server to process it (though
if the statement is EXECUTE PROCEDURE and the procedure executed returns
values, you need to use DECLARE, OPEN, FETCH and CLOSE or DECLARE and
FOREACH to fetch the returned data). This doesn't work for non-preparable
statements, the most notable examples of which are the version 6.00 and
later CONNECT, DISCONNECT and SET CONNECTION statements. Workaround code
for these has been provided to this news group in the course of the last
year, so it should be in the archives somewhere.
