Steve, Don't forget that as you increase the number of buffers, there are more to clean at checkpoint time so your checkpoint duration will increase. You can counter-act this by tuning the LRU_MAX_DIRTY and LRU_MIN_DIRTY onconfig parameters. You can also add more LRU's to have less buffers per LRU but then also don't forget to increase your CLEANERS...
