Compressing a Busy Table

IDS 11.70.FC8 Linux GNU x86 I am wanting to bring compression into our environment and am wondering about when I am actually compressing or repacking, what kind of interference I can expect on my data being used at the time. I have played with this feature before but I know I will face this question when I bring it up in reference to a busy table. Thanx in Advance, Dan
Hi Dan, I have successfully used repack on a busy table, no noticeable issues; the system just works on individual pages and moves on. Obviously if you're repacking a table any indices will be updated as you go along. I would like to think compress is similarly transparent but I have never tested it on a busy active table. I would welcome anyone else's experience. You don't mention shrink but this is where I'd have the greatest concern. I have seen a shrink operation take over 10 seconds. Due to this I tend to only do shrink operations during downtime where they are quick and safe. Ben.
