Hi, After I installed informix-online version 5 on SCO unix 3.2 , and I try to use tbinit to initial it, I get a error message. That is: tbinit: shmat [EINVAL][22]: shared memory base address illegal using 0x80480000, needs 0x80800000 tbinit: fatal error in shared memory creation Does anybody know how to inital and start informix-online, please give me a help? Thank you very much. Adrian

Thank you very much. You need to change SHMBASE param in your ONCONFIG file. See for correct value in your release notes. -- With best regards, Yuri Dovgart, SAP R/3, Informix consultant, "Telecominvest" company. This error message can be misleading. Most likely you need to increase the shared memory parameters for the SCO operating system. The default for SHMMAX is way too low (524,288 bytes) and should be increased to a sufficient level to accommodate your shared memory requirements. Use the SCO Admin kernel configuration utility to increase SHMMAX and re-link the kernel or do the job by hand, editing /etc/conf/cf.d/stune (that path may be off a bit) and running link_unix. If you require a particularly large amount of shared memory, you may also need to increase MAXUMEM kernel parameter to exceed the size of total shared memory allocated to the 5.x engine. Thank you very much. Larry gave you a lot of details which I couldn't, but omitted one which will help. Basically, you need to have SHMMAX set to a size such that when you create two shared memory segments, they have contguous addresses -- the error message is complaining that this didn't happen. My recollection is that the SCO platform aligns each shared memory segment on a 4 MB boundary, so you need to set the value of SHMMAX to 4 MB or a multiple of that (where the parameter may be something other than SHMMAX -- it's the one that controls the maximum size of a single shared memory segment; SHMMAX might be the total permitted shared memory). Your error says needed 0x80800000, so it might be that shared memory segments are now aligned on 8 MB boundaries, or it might be that your maximum segment size is larger than 4 MB but not set to 8 MB. Anyway, juggling with the numbers should resolve the problem for you. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
