**** PLEASE DO NOT POST MIME ***** DO NOT use RAID 5 ( see various threads on c.d.i. for why). RAID 1 (mirroring) will provide resilience and some read improvement but the write will suffer. Best is to use RAID 0+1 (or 1+0) (mirrored stripes or striped mirrors) which offer resilience and good read and write performance, particularly on long serial reads. PLEASE DO NOT POST MIME to this forum! It's hard to read in a text reader and it uses at least twice the bandwidth and storage of clean text. Now to your question which is: > Just wanted to know if RAID 5 or RAID 1 is recommended to use for storing > informix database data. We are building a new server and wanted to know if > RAID 5 is better or RAID 1 ? =0A=0AAn early reply would be appreciated. The short answer is: NO RAID5!!!! RAID10 is the best choice - that is <N> mirrored pairs (RAID1) striped together (RAID0). RAID10 gives you maximum performance, data redundancy and safety, with vastly better recovery times than RAID5 and massively lower performance reduction during recovery. Look in the CDI archive or go to the web site www.baarf.com where you will find my detailed explanation of what's wrong with RAID5 altogether and why it's just a bad choice for relational databases. That was posted to CDI about a month ago. You will also find on the BAARF site similar papers on the topic by several other experts including some notable Oracle insiders. <Original post SNIPPED> Art S. Kagel
Surley you are just trying to push buttons. Mime and a Raid 5 question in the same email....it has to be more than coincedence. ;) --- "Neville Joh...." <nevillemonteiro@rediffmail.com> wrote: > This is a multipart mime message > > > --Next_1111038444---0-202.54.124.145-8436 > Content-type: text/plain; > charset=iso-8859-1 > Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable > Content-Disposition: inline > > Hello Everybody,=0A=0AJust wanted to know if RAID 5 > or RAID 1 is recommende= > d to use for storing informix database data.
