Download IDS 9.4 Developer Edition
Posted in 2008
A developer wanted a free "Developer Edition" of IDS 9.4 to match a customer's installation, having only found the 11.50 Developer Edition. Respondents (Martin Fuerderer, Art Kagel, Jonathan Leffler) explained that no Developer Edition ever existed for 9.4 — that free, non-expiring offering began with 11.50; older releases only had 90-day trials, which IBM no longer publishes since 9.40 is out of marketing and near end of support. Suggested options: ask the customer's IBM rep for a (possibly extended) trial or licence, or develop on 11.50 while checking the 9.40 manuals for feature differences. No 9.4 download was found.

Hi! I'm a new developer in Informix. I've been trying to download de IDS 9.4 Developer Edition because my customers use the official 9.4. I've only been successfully searching the 11.5 developer edition downloaded from iiug... But I would like to download 9.4. Do you know where can I find this? Thank you a lot!
Hi, no, I don't know. And this is mainly, because such a thing does not exist (to my best knowledge). The Developer Edition of IDS is a relatively new offering that exists only for the new versions of IDS, namely 11.50. But it was not introduced for older versions - with IDS 9.4 now being quite old. Ahms, I thought that this version exists because I found this web searching this version of Informix. I saw in "http://www.dbtalk.net/comp-databases-informix/informix-ids-9-40-trial-298897.ht ml" that in iiug.org was posible to download this 9.4 developer edition in this forum. Altough is true that that message was wrote in 2006. Thank you for your answer, I will continue searching for a while, anyway I have the Developer 11.5 Edition to try the main behaviour of my program.
Hi, the IDS Developer Edition is IDS with certain functional limitations, but otherwise a product that you can use for free - without a time limit. The intention is to provide a "playground" or free development platform for developers. The intent of a trial version is to give something that can be tried for a certain amount of time (often 90 days). And hopefully this trial is convincing enough for someone to then buy the product. With that in mind it is natural to offer trial versions for new product versions, so that people can try new functionality, evaluate things for their needs, etc. Therefore it is understandable that IBM now has no real interest in offering a trial version for IDS 9.4 (anymore). Usually the trial offers disappear after some time - or are replaced by trial offers for newer versions as they get available. If you can find a 9.4 trial version on IIUG web site (or other) - then you're lucky, I guess. Other possibility would be to get into contact with your IBM (sales) representative and try to convince them that you need a trial version of IDS 9.4. Maybe they are able to arrange something. But (to my knowledge) there's no IDS 9.4 Developer Edition - which would be different from a trial version. Allright, thank you for all. I will try the 11.5 developer edition for our testings.
There was no 'Developer's Edition' of IDS 9.40. What you can do is to download a 'trial' for playing with this project on your own systems for a limited period. IB the downloadable trials are timebombed for 90 days, but contact your client's IBM rep and he *may* be able to get you an extended trial. Just be careful to check the 9.40 manuals, there are many new features in IDS 10.00, 11.10, and 11.50. Thank you. I will ask our costumers to ask for a 90 days trial to develop the project. I searched for a trial of the IDS 9.40 in the IBM official page, but I only was able to find versions for the 10.0 and 11.5.
FYI: 9.40 is already EOM and will be EOS in 6 months http://www-111.ibm.com/software/support/lifecycle/PLCDetail.wss?synkey=P841938Q2 9735V05-M266011S67587I94-L239698Z22394B33 --- On Wed, 11/5/08, YEWNOK YEWNOK <yewnok@gmail.com> wrote: From: YEWNOK YEWNOK <yewnok@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Download IDS 9.4 Developer Edition [13917] To: ids@iiug.org Date: Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 8:49 AM Thank you. I will ask my boss about trying to obtain an EOM license. We will ask about the price and the conditions. Thanks a lot!

AFAIK, IDS 9.40 is out of marketing -- very near the end of its life. It will be hard to obtain copies of it unless you are an existing customer. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2008.0513 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ "Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we shall never cease to be amused."
