Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A poster asked whether moving an IDS 7.3/Solaris 8 instance to a new machine by giving that box the old host name and IP (plus editing sqlhosts) would work, so that desktop icons on hundreds of PCs wouldn't all need changing, and whether sysmaster/sysutils would object. The only substantive reply recommended avoiding the hostname swap altogether by using DNS alias (CNAME) records: point sqlhosts entries and client icons at a logical name, then just repoint the alias when the server moves, with separate aliases for the database engine and the application server. The rest of the thread is joking about host-naming conventions; no confirmation from the original poster is recorded.

DNS contains a wonderful, underused facility called ALIAS records.
Make an alias called prod_box (hmmm - that's a bit rude) and make it "point"
to the current production box. All SQLHOSTS and desktop icon names should
then refer to prod_box instead of dfcncux01. If you ever need to move
anything to another machine, you merely need to change the alias record and
no client will ever be the wiser.
Also, even if you currently have the database on the same machine that the
desktop icons (4JS?) connect to, it's worth making a separate alias for the
application server vs. the engine server. One day you might choose or be
forced to have the engine on a separate machine from the applications, so
once again, it can be very useful to move the engine access but leave access
to the executables on the original machine.
ALIAS records can be used for all sorts of things: mail servers, web
servers, jabber servers, engines, application servers, .....
Not using ALIAS records is akin to not using symbolic links for your raw
chunks.

Hmmm, that's a bit rude too. Almost.

Nor better informed.

Actually it is. I despise naming conventions like that. A free lollypop for
the first person to correctly guess what the letters mean.

Hmm:
df - default
cnc - connection
ux - Unix
01 - first one
How's that? I like cherry.
