One source of performance decrease when upgrading from 5.x to 7.x is the omission of the mandatory index rebuild. Indexes are different under releases after 5, and they must be rebuilt as part of the migration process. Drop and re-create indexes! There are also many more engine variables to play with, a performance sword that cuts both ways. It is much more involved to tune an engine under version 7 than version 5.
