Help!!! - - Informix problems - - p, p, p, p, p, p, p, p, PLEASE!! (A real puzzlething)

Okay, here it comes (the puzzle of a lifetime) 1) Sometimes it looks like Informix destroys some records and makes them unreadable, i can come up with a solution to repair these records but i need a structural solution! Why and how does informix destroy these records? 2) Every time when we are sending a string like "John" to the field <Name> (witch is 10 char's long) and we retreve the data like "John " to reduce extra work on the client software we would like to retrieve the data with no filling spaces, is there an option in Informix you can use to set these spaces off, Trim is not supported in my Informix version ?!?!
