JDBC-System or internal error java.io.IOException
Posted in 2013
A user on IDS 11.50.FC6 (AIX) with the 3.50.JC5 JDBC driver from Windows saw intermittent "System or internal error java.io.IOException" once or twice a day, with no corresponding errors in the online log (occasionally a -25580 listener-thread network error). Suggestions: capture the full Java stack trace/SQL and ISAM error codes from the client rather than relying on the server log (likely -79716, typically a broken socket), check whether a firewall is timing out idle connections, and check for high port numbers; workaround would be to have the application reconnect on failure. No confirmed cause or fix is recorded in the thread.

Hi, We're using IDS 11.50.FC6WE on AIX 6.1 , and using JDBC driver 3.50.JC5 running on Windows machine to connect the informix DB. A client application running on the windows machine is getting the data from the informix server through the JDBC connection. Connection String :- jdbc:informix-sqli://ipaddress:port/database:INFORMIXSERVER=servername;user=unam e;password-pwd Sometimes we are getting this error from the Client machine and unable to execute the Query .But it occurs very rarely and it is for a fraction of seconds. Error Details:- System or internal error java.io.IOException . System or internal error java.io.IOException . Checked in the informix online message log there are no errors found. Can anyone help on this why it is occurring and how to fix the error . Thanks in Advance for your comments and solution. Regards, Karthik
You should have an Informix error... please check it, and if needed change the exception handling to extract it... Do you have a firewall between the two systems? If yes, is it configured for closing the sessions due to inactivity timeout? If yes, does it have logs? Are you using connection pooling? Hi Fernando Nunes ,
Thanks for you Quick and prompt reply.
Question - You should have an Informix error... please check it, and if needed
change the exception handling to extract it...
Ans - I have checked in the Informix online Message Log File not able to find
any errors. Please let me know how to change the exection handling and how to
extract it .
Some times we should to get this error in our online message log .
12:13:11 listener-thread: err = -25580: oserr = 1: errstr = : System error
occurred in network function.
System error = 1.
Question - Do you have a firewall between the two systems? If yes, is it
configured
Ans - Firewall is configured but it is working fine no issues only at some
particular point of time the issues are faced and it is very rare in a day
only once the error will appear in client system ,but the Query will be
running in a interval of 10 min.
Question - for closing the sessions due to inactivity timeout? If yes, does it
have logs?
Ans - There are no logs saved only the error message is displayed as "System
or internal error java.io.IOException"
Are you using connection pooling?
Ans - Yes Fast pool is enabled
>onstat -c | egrep -i 'poll'# NETTYPE - The configuration of poll threads
# NETTYPE <protocol>,<# poll threads>
# FASTPOLL - Enables (1) or disables (0) fast
# polling of your network, if your
FASTPOLL 1
Any more information about the connection. One of the things to look for is=
port numbers over 32k. I note that the java does not like high port number=
s.

Hi , The port number we are using is below 5000 . I need to highlight one point here "The error occurs only once or twice a day rest of the time there are no errors and the connection is good and Query is working fine". Regards, Karthik
I meant the error on the client. Usually Java throws an exception with a
stack trace. In there it should be possible to see one Informix error.
Is your application hiding the stack trace?
It's possible you're facing:
-79716 System or internal error.
An operating or runtime system error or a driver internal error
occurred.
The accompanying message describes the problem.
This is usually caused by a broken socket... very usual with firewalls.
Besides fixing what is breaking the connection, the only option I see
is to change the application and when this happens try to reconnect.

Hi Fernando, Thanks .. But i am not able to see any error message in the informix online log file. I am agree it should be a firewall. If it is the case it should block every time ,But the client is accessing the Informix DB for every 10 min only at some point rarely once or twice in a day the error is occurred.
I think that Fernando was asking if you were capturing the error codes in the application that is failing. There are normally two codes, the SQL layer and the ISAM layer codes. Both will help to diagnose the problem. Art Art S.
