Overloading IDS 7.31 on Web

The scenario goes like this: 1) I connect to the Informix IDS Server using the ODBC driver and asp technology from a web site. 2) I construct a generic query that can place a heavy load on the server. For this reason, the query may take several minutes to complete. 3) I have a special server for reporting using the replication features of the IDS server. This avoids impacting the main production server. 4) The users are notorious for submitting a query via the web and then hitting the back button the browser because they decide to submit another query or request a different report. 7) I detect the window onUnload event and close the cursors, close the connections to the DB, and then release the memory. This is done with the standard asp commands. 8) Here is the problem: The IDS 7.31 server continues to execute a query untill completion before closing the connection. They (Informix Tech Support) is initially claiming there is no feature to tell the query to stop its execution. They also claim there are very few users complaining about this issue. **************************************************************** Obviously, it is unacceptable to have several cancelled queries execute to completion in a web environment. Does any body have any suggestions on how I can use asp to tell the DB to stop executing a query immediately and close the connection? If not please complain to Informix so we can get this serious problem fixed. Call 1-800-274-8184 and ask for this feature. So far they don't believe that they really need the ability to stop a query from executing. To the Informix USENET Group, Interesting. I'm making a reply to my own email. Anyway.... it turns out there is a bug in the IDS 7.31 engine. This is bug number 117843. It reads as follows: Bug: 117843 FEA. ODBC 3.3 SQLCANCEL FUNCTION CALL IS NOT CARRIED OUT BY IDS Date: 1999-08-31 Category: ONLINE Type: SW Component: ASF GEN. NETWORK CONNECTIVITY Description: In a multi-threaded ODBC 3.3 application that issue SQLCANCEL on a running thread , the IDS does not carry out the cancel request and it does not stop what it was doing when it receives SQLCANCEL Let's all give Jamal a special thanks for isolating this bug about 1 year ago. Way to go! Unfortunately, at this time, R&D is failing to see that this is a serious issue. In my humble opinion it is serious and needs to be addressed. So, lets have everybody call R&D and politely demand that they fix the bug or add the feature. Until then it'll cause all of the web programmers and DB Administrators to suffer from the performance problems. Hopefully, Informix will come around and see it our way in the very near future. Cheers! Best regards to all! jkent jkent wrote: > The scenario goes like this: > > 1) I connect to the Informix IDS Server using the ODBC driver and asp > technology from a web site. > > 2) I construct a generic query that can place a heavy load on the > server.
