Multiple instances of Informix

Does anybody know of "cookbook" type guide that goes over how to set up multiple instances of Informix on a UNIX (HPUX) machine? We are attempting to do some development work and can't afford an additional server for the dev work. HOwever, we want to make sure that the dev work does not pull our production instance down... Any help would be appreciated. George Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

Basically, you'll create multiple c{on|tb}onfig files and set your {ON|TB}CONFIG environment variable according to which instance you wish to access. -- Forte International, P.O. Read the Administrator's Guide for the Online engine. There is a chapter called "Multiple Residency" and it's quite straight-forward. I've never worked on a machine in living memory with less than 2 engines on it, often of different versions.
We have 6 instances on our production machine. You need to keep your eye on memory usage. If possible keep the shared memory size low on your development engine. We don't have an HP machine but I'd guess guidelines are similar for most platforms. I'm sure you already know this, but Informix is a real memory and processing hog. You'll know pretty quick if you're impacting your production engine. One word of caution - if your development instance is a reasonable image of your production instance your programmers are going to have to be VERY careful. It's so easy to be accessing the production instance by accident when tables, dbspaces, etc. are the same. Sorry to say, we learned this one the hard way. (I posted a similar question a few weeks back but found these chapters later.)
