XML/PDF/Images/Pictures/Audio/Video files
Posted in 2010
A user asked whether Informix 11.5 can store XML, PDF, images, audio and video, and how/where to store and retrieve them. Answers: yes, using large object types — "dumb" TEXT/BYTE objects held in the table or in a blobspace (onspaces -b), or "smart" CLOB/BLOB objects in a smart blobspace (onspaces -S). Smart LOBs allow partial reads/updates and are always logged (so replicate to MACH11 secondaries); blobspace blobs aren't logged but perform better than tablespace blobs. No DataBlade is needed unless extra features (e.g. text search, Timeseries) are wanted; for syntax and examples the poster was pointed to the manuals and the "samples" directory.

Hi All, I am looking for some information on whether or not it is possible to store any or all of the subjected files in Informix Database 11.5. If it is possible, would you please provide little detail information on each of these? Information like; a) where to store? i.e. the space for each type of file. b) how to store? i.e. Create table, column type and Insert statement information. c) how to fetch data? i.e. how to select the stored information from database for each of these files. d) Any other information that you might think would be helpful for me to understand the said concept better.. Please let me know if I you need more information from me on this. Thanks in advance.. Regards, Dharmendra

Yes, we have a document store in an Informix RDBMS.

? In a BLOB space.

As BLOB values.

SELECT statements.

I don't think storing BLOBs in a DB has been anything out of the
ordinary for years.
Yes to all, see details below.

These documents can all be stored in one of Informix's Large Object types.
There are four:
- Dumb Large Objects - These are created either within table space or in
separate "Blobspaces" created with the onspaces utility using the -b flag.
- TEXT - a "dumb" large object suitable for printable text files such as
XML or PDF documents.
- DATA - a "dumb" large object suitable for non-printable or binary
files such as the Images, Pictures, Audio, and Video files you mention.
- Smart Large Objects - These are created in SmartBlobSpaces created
with the onspaces utility using the -S flag
- CLOB - a "smart" large object suitable for printable text files such
as XML or PDF documents.
- BLOB - a "smart" large object suitable for non-printable or binary
files such as the Images, Pictures, Audio, and Video files you mention.
The main difference between Dumb and Smart large objects is that you can
easily retrieve and update partial data from a Smart Large Object but not
from a Dumb Large Object. Other differences: Smart Large Objects are always
logged and so can be replicated on MACH11 secondary servers. Dumb Large
Objects can only be logged if they are stored "IN TABLE" (also known as
Tablespace Blobs) not in a Blobspace. DLOs stored in Blobspaces (known as
Blobspace Blobs) are not logged. However, Blobspace Blobs perform better
than Tablespace Blobs.

Thanks a lot Art for explaining this in detail.
One additional question related to this is, in order to use Smart large
object, do I need to have a DataBlade too?
or it can be used without DataBlade products..

No, no datablades unless you need some of the functionality that a datablade
will give you like the Basic Text Search or Excalibur Text Datablades for
advanced text blob searching or the Timeseries Datablade to process time
related streaming data quickly.
