However, from bitter personal experience, I would say that Informix is the most difficult to buy, Oracle is the most difficult to use and DB2 the most difficult to admit to using. :-) Informix has the best database technology for data warehousing, if you can decide which one to use (XPS or Redbrick). IBM has a complete solution, but it's largely cobbled together of stuff that isn't quite current, and Oracle has the best sales and marketing. I don't make the last observation lightly. Oracle will be the easiest one to sell to your management, and the worst to use. HTH. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
I will also like to contribute my two cents.
My company is a big Oracle Shop but for all Datawarehouse projects & Data Blade
projects we use Informix Technology. I have couple of Datawarehouse projects on
XPS 821.UD4 on Solaris E10000 boxes. It's a real fun to work with XPS. I have
checked the release notes of XPS 8.3, It's sounds to me a real great product
which I am planning to upgrade after Y2K
Also, the biggest datawarehouse I have is 27 TB on XPS, this we choose after
having benchmark on other DBMS also.
Try to attend the Master XPS Training and you will see why people why Informix
XPS. The best thing I like about Informix is that it really tells you that what
you queries are doing at any stage. Also XPS provides really cool features like
Hybrid Fragmentation, Push Down Semi Join, Different types of tables, Light
Scans, Light Appends, New onstat parameters, new onutil options, enhanced Alter
Fragment, RGM and TRUNCATE COMMAND in XPS 8.3.
Compare the Informix Parallelism with Oracle parallel DML and you will see which
one to choose.
I have no experience with Redbrick. Also there are new benchmarks on tpc.com for
XPS.
Try to run your own bwnchmark on all dbms and then choose. We have gone through
this stage and we decided Informix XPS.
