Informix 5 and Solaris problem

I am temporarily administering an Informix 5 database on our Sun 1000 Solaris 2.3 machine. Unfortunately when the machine went down on Monday morning for its weekly reboot the database server didn't come back up. The Problem is as follows: when I run tbinit, I get a "cannot initialize shared memory" error. When I checked the drives that the chunks are on using the format command, Solaris declared that they were or "unknown type" while I know that they are Sun 1.05 disks. The partitioning on the disks seems to be what we originally set up for Informix. I also checked all f the shared memory parameters and they seem to be ok. Truthfully, since Solaris is not identifying the disks properly I don't know that this is an Informix problem. I am also unclear whether telling Solaris to accept the disks as the correct types will write any data onto the raw disk space when I save - my feeling is that it will not but I cannot find this mentioned anywhere. I would appreciate any help in the matter - I have called Informix already but I have since learned that my company let the maintenance agreement lapse and it will take a couple of days to get through our red tape to get the maintenance agreement back.
