Help with CGI-tools and length of returned string
Posted in 1996
I have been working for the past month on an application integrating the Informix CGI toolkit, our Informix databases, and HTML-forms. In the last phases of alpha testing, I have hit an apparent wall and wonder if anyone out there has a workaround. I have send mail to Informix directly but the toolkit is unsupported. The problem: The function icgi_getvalue is used exclusively to retrieve HTML form contents. Unfortunately, Informix-4GL has a hard limit on the length of strings returned from a function (< 512 char). If a user enters more than 511 characters in a textarea on an HTML form, the I-4gl program pukes out very ungracefully. In our normal I-4GL code, we get around this limitation by using global variables. Global variables cannot be used to get the HTML-form values however. Ironically, the examples included with the CGI toolkit create an array of name and value to get the form data. The length of the "value" variable is _2048_ char. Configuration: HP 9000/750 with HP-UX 9.05 Informix-Online 5.02 Informix-4GL/RDS 4.11 Informix 4glcgi kit dated Aug, 1995 BTW: Overall the toolkit is really good. I had to completely rethink how to approach the database and datachanges, but in general I have been pleased. As mentioned above, there is one _BIG_ problem tho..... Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Harold L.
