One alternative that I have used in a couple of applications is to place functions which use embedded SQL into separate modules. I use ESQL to compile these modules to object files, and then link these with the C++ program (which is compiled separately). One of these applications runs 24 hours a day synchronizing our Informix database with our PICK database. I've not had any problems so far. Another alternative you really should consider is a good set of C++ classes. The only commercial product which I have used is Db.h++ (I believe the newer versions are called Tools.h++). It has its ups and downs ... at the time I developed the applications I mentioned it wasn't available to me. I believe there are a fair number of alternatives depending on your platform. S.
