RE: RH Linux and INFX-SE problem

Mario,
Thanks for the explanation. VERY clear and VERY thorough. Maybe you should
write docs for Informix. On second thought, I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Doug,
You are trying to run the sqlexecd daemon program, which is the one you
will have to use if you want other machines to access your Informix Server,
OR if you want to access the Informix Server via the tcp/ip protocol, using
TLI or SOCKETS from the same machine. Either way you need to start the
sqlexecd program.
The SQLXECD program translates request from a TCP/IP port (placed by
clients) to the local sqlexec program. In this case the protocol
specification in the file
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts could be sesoctcp (for sockets) and setlitcp
for (Transport Layer Interface) in the case of RedHat, it only supports
sockets, thus your protocol should be sesoctcp. You are receiving the
error because you specified a different protocol for the NetWork
Communication Facility.
Well, in other hand, there is no need for all the above if you only want to
access INFORMIX-SE locally, that is, using the pipes communication facility
(seipcpip), in such a case, your client programs will communicate directly
to the sqlexec program ($INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexec), no need for the sqlexecd.
As you can see seipcpip service is not related to tcp/ip, thus, you do not
need
to start any daemon process.
In your configuration, your Hostname is cilinux, you gave an arbitrary name
to the INFORMIX-SE server (demo_se), your protocol for local connections
is (seipcpip) and your service name is (sqlexec). Your sqlhosts file, should
look like this:
---begin of sqlhosts file located at $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts----
demo_se seipcpip cilinux sqlexec
---end of sqlhosts files
Having the following environment variables set:
INFORMIXSERVER=demo_se;export INFORMIXSERVER
INFORMIXDIR=the_path_where_you_installed_the_product;export INFORMIXDIR
PATH=$PATH:$INFORMIXDIR/bin;export PATH--and in my early days dealing with INFORMIX-SE, I used to set--
SQLEXEC=$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexec;export SQLEXEC
DBPATH=the_path_where_you_have_your_database(s);export DBPATH
You should be able to run dbaccess, and it should not complaint at all.
But I want the Network Connection?
Ok, let's add a second line in the sqlhosts files:
---begin of sqlhosts file located at $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts----
demo_se seipcpip cilinux sqlexec
demo_tcp sesoctcp cilinux sqltcp
---end of sqlhosts files
Notice that we have given another name and another service name for
the Network connection. At this point , you should add an entry in the
/etc/services file , this is because it will be a network connection, such
as telnet, ftp and so on.
Add the following line to the /etc/services file, notice that the
portnumber (1580),
is just an example, you can use almost any number.
sqltcp 1580/tcp # My INFORMIX-SE NetWork Connection Service
Name
Now let's move your INFORMIXSEVER environment variable to point to the
new server:
INFORMIXSERVER=demo_tcp;export INFORMIXSERVER
Now, start the daemon process , so that it can listen to port 1580, using
the following command:
$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd demo_tcp
By this time, you should be able to access INFORMIX-SE using either local
connections
or network connections by changing the value of the INFORMIXSERVER
environment
variable to the appropriate one.
NOTE: Further connections do not need to start the daemon server again!.
For the Client/Machines, the only thing you need to be sure of (aside from
the proper
installation of client software) is that they have an entry in the services
file, for the
sqltcp 1580/tcp service.
Hope this helps.
