Long Transaction Despite DYNAMIC_LOGS = 2
A DBA on IDS 11.50 (AIX) was puzzled that a transaction was flagged and aborted as a long transaction (LTXHWM 70 / LTXEHWM 80, 100 logs of 33 MB) even though DYNAMIC_LOGS was set to 2, with no new logs added despite free dbspace. Replies explained this is expected behaviour, not a bug: DYNAMIC_LOGS doesn't prevent long transactions; it only adds logical logs if the server would otherwise run out of log space during the rollback, to stop the instance hanging. Here the rollback finished within the ~28 remaining logs, so no dynamic logs were needed. To avoid the abort, the transaction must be made smaller or the log space/LTXHWM raised.

There is plenty of space for more logical logs to be created elsewhere in the
instance, but no attempt, that I can tell, was made to do so.

hanging the system", I don't think it prevents longtx itself.

Hi Clifton,
I believe you misunderstand the intent of dynamic logs.
Back in the day , it was possible to fill all your logical logs with a long
transaction, and hang the instance. The only solution was to contact technical
support to basically add enough logical logs so that you could rollback the
transaction.
DYNAMIC_LOGS was created to eliminate the possibility of a long transaction
from filling all logs and hanging the instance. DYNAMIC_LOGS does not mean you
cannot get a long transaction, as the logs only get added if you run out of
logs during the rollback of a transaction.

Clifton, my inputs are as followings:
The transaction by the user "ifxcmgt" spanned 2.2 GB (LTXHWM=70%) out of 3.1
GB total logical log dbspace (~33000 KBx100 or 3.1 GB); therefore, it was
defined as a long transaction and was rolled back.
Transaction rollback and other processes also generate logical-log records and
your instance had about 920 MB left (3.1 GB - 2.2 GB) in logical log space or
about 28 logical logs left.
Based on your onlinelog file, the aborting of this long transaction was done
after using up another 15 more logical logs; therefore, no dynamic log was
added.
