But we only have one Sparc 1000E and one Sparc 2000E. Based upon our LIMITTED experience with Sparc 1000E and 2000E. Here are our conclusions: 1) The OS defaults for Solaris are not appropriate for Sparc 1000 and 2000. They are more or less for low end Sparcs. 2) You MUST download "SymBEL" from http://www.sun.com. Search the word "SymBEL" once you get access to Sun's WEB server. SymBEL is developed by Sun for Solaris 2.x, but it is not an officially supported performance monitoring tool. As far as I know, there is only one book on the market that discusses the performance tuning for Sun. The same author (Adrian Cockcroft) has a program written in SymBEL to monitor Sparc performance. We had similar problem with Sparc 2000E's performance. A stored procedure running on Sparc 20 required 4 hours to run, while the same stored procedure with the identical data on Sparc 2000E required 4 days. Our Sparc 2000 has 12 CPUS with 1 GB memory. We were puzzled for a long time until we downloaded SymBEL. Right after we loaded SymBEL with "virtual_adrian.se," the tool suggested us to change two system settings in the /etc/system file. After we did the changes and reboot the server, the stored procedure took only 10 minutes to complete. We are still fine tuning the performance for all our database servers. Sparc 2000E's performance is only half of our production goal. According to Sun's Sales Representative, Solaris 2.5 provides 40 to 70 percent performance improvement. You may want to consider to upgrade to 2.5 (or even 2.5.1) just for the performance reason. We have just completed our upgrade but have not perform benchmark testing yet. Chao Din
