Re: NewEra to exploit Universal Server (fwd)

Hi Kerry, sad you couldn't make it to the conference, but here are some impressions from my visit. kerry@kcbbs.gen.nz (Kerry Sainsbury) wrote: :In article <4riped$j8i@nic.global-one.no>, :Nils.Myklebust@ccmail.telemax.no (Nils Myklebust) wrote: :>BUT: We are talking about a half year delay. Of course ;-) :Today I want to know how NE plans to integrate with Java (and what are :Informix's plans re: JDBC btw?). By December I might well be *demanding* :tight integration. They wouldn't say much about java support at the conference except that they where working on something that would become a separate product and be released for beta testing around new year. There was little to no information about what this would be. Strange. Informix's attitude towards JDBC seems to be that it isn't good enough for full support of the Universal server. Consequently instead of doing the right thing and work with Sun on a standard, it seems they plan to release their own class library. This was something some guy from Informix told me directly, so others at Informix may have other plans. As you, we also, and probably a lot of other people, depend on such information beeing available to enable us making our own plans for future development. Come on Informix. Release information on your plans - now. For JDBC support look to OpenLink. They are working on it. :Informix need to ship something with a decent development environment and :a modern GUI look ASAP. :Support for Illustra is just a niceity that the vast majority of Informix :users simply are NOT waiting for. Exactly, but don't expect Informix to change their plans. They say they have asked their customers who have answered that a delay of 6 months wouldn't make much of a difference to them. Informix's only problem is they seem to have asked only a handfull of their larger customers and forgotten everybody else. I did even talk to one customer of Informix buying at the rate of over a millon dollars a year who was extremly upset about the delay, so it isn't only us small guys. :>For those who have finished NewEra :>applications it may not take to long to move them to the new version :>but we are talking about sometime in 1997 even for these. :The longer the delay till NE 3.0, the smaller penetration NE will make :into the world at large. Developers can't wait that long. :>Corinne wrote: :>:NewEra is intended to support the Datablade technology that will be :>:utilized in Universal Server. Because most business processing only needs simple characters :and numbers. Our customers don't *need* us to "dream up" data types. :Waiting another year would be fine. I'd call that thinking ahead. :NE isn't a "today" solution! :NE 2.0 is a "yesterday" solution. Mild Kerry, mild. :NE 3.0 is a "tomorrow" solution. :Release a 2.5 and stand a chance. May be (they whould stand a chance), but it didn't sound like they even understood the issues, much less wanted to talk about them with anybody. My major problem with Informix right now is that they are neither talking (about what they plan to do) nor are they asking anyone what they should do. This is in the development tools area. They are talking a lot about their engines. If the tools people could even be half as talkative they might stir up some interest and get some results.
