Ignoring Case During Searches

Hello,
I have been wrestling with a problem for a wile and I wonder if anyone knows
a good kludge for it.
I am using Informix 4GL and Querying By Example on a 210 character note field
and I want my users to be able ignore case when they enter a search pattern.
For example, I want them to be able to enter:
fish*
and have it match notes that start:
Fishing is ....
and
fishNet, the new protocol
I haven't been able to figure out how to do this without restricting them to
either uppercase or lowercase exclusively.
I tried working with something like:
select * from bug
where downshift(note) matches downshift("summary.aov*")
but upshift and downshift don't work with the SQL that the construct statement
produces.
We are using a Sun 4 and Informix 4GL version 4.10.
I appreciate any information you be able to pass on.
