RSS to Primary ?
Posted in 2016
A DBA on IDS 11.70.FC7W2 (Solaris 11) with one primary and four async RSS nodes killed the primary, manually promoted an RSS to HDR secondary and then to primary; the other RSS nodes reconnected and the old primary restarted standalone. He asked whether this is supported. Madison Pruet first said it works as designed, then corrected himself: because async RSS nodes aren't guaranteed current, manually promoting an arbitrary RSS can leave another node further ahead, causing inconsistency and eventual failure — Connection Manager picks the node with the most recent logs, and he asked that a bug be opened. Art Kagel confirmed only sync HDR secondaries are known up to date, but said the manual route is permitted when there's no alternative. The thread ended discussing missing forum emails rather than a formal fix.

Hi,
We are running Informix 11.70.FC7W2 on Solaris 11. We tested the following
scenario and want to see why it works and if its recommended or not to do
this.
We have 1 informix "source" server with 4 RSS servers connected to it.
1) We brought down the Source server "onmode -ky"
2) Took 1 of the RSS servers and promoted it to HDR (while the primary was
down).
3) Then promoted the HDR server to Primary and all the other RSS servers
reconnected to the new Primary.
4) Then started the original source and it came up fine as a standalone
Is this ok? Should informix allow this? Should Informix allow an RSS to be
promoted to HDR then to Primary even when the original primary is down?
Thank You,

Kinda useful it does, especially if your 'source' has died

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px
#715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white
!important; } I just reread the original post and have to say that "Nope - it
isn't quite working like it should". The problem is that the server that you
converted to the HDR secondary would not have been fully synchronized. That
means that everything would not have been replicated to it. Since you have
multiple RSS servers that presents a problem because the one that you promoted
might not have had the most current logs. One of the other servers could have
been more advanced than the one that you promoted, and that would create a
problem in which eventually the secondary would crash.
The connection manager can promote an RSS server directly into a primary, but
it first checks to see which RSS server has the most current logs and will
only promote that node. If you manually do this, then you risk creating
inconsistency between the remaining nodes which will eventually result in
server failure.
Please open a bug on this.

Hi Paul,
Indeed it is useful. Though I forgot to mention we are using RSS in Async
mode. So how does the engine know that all the RSS servers are up to date
and able to convert it to HDR and Primary if it never was in full sync with
the primary? Basically, I see the commands working, though is it supported
by Informix as a proper method of promoting servers when the primary is
down?

As Madison pointed out you can run into problems.

The engine doesn't know that the RSS secondaries are up-to-date. Only HDR
secondaries in Synchronous mode are "KNOWN" to be up-to-date.
That said, as Paul pointed out, if your primary is down and cannot be
brought back up in a reasonable time, and you do not have an HDR secondary
(you should if possible), then you have no choice and Informix permits it.

Thank you all for your input.
I did not get Madison's Post via email, though I checked the forum site at
members.iiug.org/forums/ids/ and I do see his post there. I did not see
his posts in spam and am not filtering. Anyone know why I am not getting
all the emails to gmail? Is there a different way to sign up to get ALL
the emails and posts?
Thank You,
