DBSERVERNAME in an HDR Environment
Posted in 2016
User asked whether DBSERVERNAME must be identical or different between primary and secondary servers in an HDR environment. Experts confirmed they must be different (unique in sqlhosts file). The resolved approach was to create a group in sqlhosts or use Connection Manager, allowing clients to reference a single name that automatically points to the primary when online or secondary when offline.

Hi, In an HDR Environment, the DBSERVERNAME of the primary server must be the same of the secondary or they must be differents ? Thanks in advance.
Original post: Hi, In an HDR Environment, the DBSERVERNAME of the primary server must be the same of the secondary or they must be differents ? Thanks in advance. Reply: They would be different due to the fact that DBSERVERNAMES would need to be unique in the sqlhosts file, and each server would need to have both server names in the sqlhosts file. Don't remember if anyone else mentioned this: if you set up a group in your sqlhosts files that includes both the primary and secondary, or you use Connection Manager to connect to the server, you can use the group or connection manager name in the synonym definition instead of the actual server name of the primary and then they will point to the primary while it is online and the secondary when the primary is offline.
