To start, I am a system admin acting like a Informix DBA. I have purchased two new servers, they are both Dual Pentium III 800 Xeon servers with 512 meg of Ram. They are running RedHat 6.2 and will run the new IDS 7.3 for Linux. My problem is that I have to have one of the systems up by next week and need to know if anyone has any sample ONCONFIG files for a system that resembles my system specs. I know I must sound like a complete moron, but if someone could possibly HELP, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, since Linux does not handle RAW partitions, I will need to set up a cooked enviornment, so will I also have the 2 gig restrictions for DB chunk????????????? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

I posted some quicky config instructions early in the summer, look in the IIUG Archive. > Also, since Linux does not handle RAW partitions, I will need to set up > a cooked enviornment, so will I also have the 2 gig restrictions for DB > chunk????????????? Yes, 2GB restriction is absolute. Use symbolic links for chunk paths so that you can switch to RAW chunks eventually. Art S. I'm just worried about configuring the server right the first time and not have to jack around with it for a week. Is there really alot of bad things that happen when running a cooked enviornment? We don't have a large company and the amount of writes are limited to a burst of data at night, then predominately reads the rest of the time. Truly not trying to be an idiot, but the way our existing servers were set up to begin with are a joke, I know that much for sure, so i'm trying to do it right this time. No. Cooked devices (block) perform 15-25% slower than RAW (char) on most systems and Cooked filesystem files another 10-15% slower still. That's all. > Truly not trying to be an idiot, but the way our existing servers were > set up to begin with are a joke, I know that much for sure, so i'm > trying to do it right this time. Can't blame someone for wanting to better himself. ;0) Art S. Kagel
Yes, run raw only. Mirror everything.. >Is there really alot of bad things that happen when running a cooked >enviornment?
