Upgrading from 11.5 to 11.7
Posted in 2011
A DBA asked where to find documentation for an in-place upgrade of IDS from 11.5 to 11.7. Replies pointed to the IBM Infocenter migration guide and an IBM support docview page. Art Kagel outlined the procedure: install the new version in a new directory, copy/merge onconfig and sqlhosts, shut down the instance, repoint the INFORMIXDIR link, start the new oninit, let conversions finish, then drop distributions and rerun UPDATE STATISTICS for tables and SPL routines. On reverting, since 11.7 makes structural/SMI changes, you don't need a restore: take a precautionary archive, then use 'onmode -b <version>' to revert and restart under the old binaries; John Miller added that conversion guard (RESTORE_POINT_DIR with onrestorept) can roll back pages if the conversion itself fails. The poster was satisfied.

I have been tasked to upgrade one of our servers from 11.5 to 11.7 I have not installed or upgraded Informix in many years. This should be real easy, and I plan to do an in-place upgrade. Question: where can I download a guide / manual to upgrade from 11.5 to 11.7 ? You can download all documentation from IBM, or you can read it online: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v117/topic/com.ibm.mig.doc/ids_ mig_244.htm HTH Hrvoje On 03.08.2011. 13:11, Dirk Cornel.... wrote: > I have been tasked to upgrade one of our servers from 11.5 to 11.7 > > I have not installed or upgraded Informix in many years. Upgrading Informix is trivial. Install the new version in a new directory,
copy the Onconfig and sqlhosts files (or update a copy of .hr new
Onconfig.WTF with your specific values), shutdown the current instance,
change the INFORMIXDIR link to point to the new installed directory, start
the new oninit, wait for conversions to complete, drop distributions on all
tables, rerun update statistics for all tables then for all SPL pitied,
done.

"wait for conversions to complete"
There are conversions going from 11.5 to 11.7 ? Does this mean that if I want
to revert back, I have to restore the old version of the database ?

Yes there are structural conversions, new SMI tables, changes to sysadmin,
etc. No, you do not have to restore the old database, though I do hope you
took a precautionary archive before the upgrade. You would just have to run
an "onmode -b <version>" command to revert the data structures back to that
version and then restart the instance with the older software.

You actually have 2 options besides restoring.
1) Using onmode -b <version> will revert the system back to your original
version
2) You can use conversion guard (which is generally on by default). Once
the conversions
completes this can not be used, This saves a binary image of every
page before
any modification are made and stored in the directory pointed to
RESTORE_POINT_DIR.
You can use onrestorept to restore the pages, After the conversion
complete, you can
using option #1 above

Fine, fine ..... you can call me that. But I know one of you will at least have the Docs link saved somewhere - I do not.
