positive suggestions? I would prefer not to have to reinstall Informix from
scratch, nor recreate the server instances if I can avoid that.

Silly question but which user is starting the service? I assume its a local
one with sufficient privilege.

I should add that the onstat tool reports that shared memory is not
initialised (which confirms the obvious, I suppose).
The immediate questions are how has this happened, and what can we do about it?

Andrew, Yes and No. Yesterday I disconnected the laptop and took it to the other room, reconnected to the network, and was able to run the demo. However I did not shut down Windows whilst in transit. This morning I took the precaution of shutting down Windows first, then moving to the other room and restarting it. That's when the problem first arose. It's definitely a shared memory issue, but shared memory doesn't initialise back at the 'home' location either. Something has happened to screw up initialising shared memory, which I suppose explains why the server won't start - wherever the laptop is. Neil.

It is normal for windows installation that "oninit -v" process "hangs"
with "mode = 5"
because oninit process is working in foreground (dos prompt).
Please post online log (of this last oninit) and onconfig file here.

Typically under Windows I would suspect a shared memory allocation =
error. - that Windows had loaded something into memory precisely where =
Informix wanted to go. I would then use Process Explorer from =
Sysinternals to debug what it was that Windows was loading. We have =

YAY! managed to fix the problem. We had also this morning removed the local "informix" account from the local Administrators group, in order to protect the machine when it went out to do a demo. The idea was that on site the demonstrator would log in to Windows as 'informix' and have limited access to what is actually a development machine. The significance has just struck me, and it was that change that prevented the IDS instance from starting. Pity the logs did not record a security issue, but there you go. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to try to help. Neil.
I've had the same problem with the Informix instance I installed on my own
laptop. The engine/service starts but I cannot access it. I finally just
shut it down and use the instance on my Linux box remotely when I'm at home
and use a Linux VM running Informix when I must access an instance on the
road for client demos etc. I know that doesn't help you today. I can only
add that 1) I have Windows and 2) open a case with IBM, this should be
treatable as an installation problem which should not IB require a separate
support contract.
