Michael, Do you have a device pair /dev/nrct0 and /dev/rct0 - some tape devices can do non (nr) -rewind. That may be the problem. I've noticed some install tapes for Unix are delivered that way. You use tar xvf /dev/n-something, search to end of archive, repeat again and again till you reach the bitter end. Hope this helps, and forgive my ignorance if it doesn't.
