Question: can gcc be used instead of Sun's cc when compiling with INFORMIX-4GL on Solaris? Answers: set the environment variable INFORMIXC=gcc, which is the key step; you may need to adjust LD_LIBRARY_PATH and translate platform-specific compiler flags (e.g. -KPIC to -fPIC, and for 64-bit builds -xarch=v9 to -m64). For a permanent change you can edit $INFORMIXDIR/bin/c4gl after backing it up, with the caveat that problems not reproducible with Sun's cc shouldn't be filed with Tech Support.

Here is the question:
Is it possible to use gcc instead of cc with I-4GL ?
If yes, how do you configure i4gl to use gcc instead of cc and which flag
should be used.
Thanks

Set the environment variable
INFORMIXC=gcc
You may have to fiddle with LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but probably not.

You might also have to worry about whether -KPIC needs mapping to
-fPIC and any other platform specific options. If you're using 64-bit
versions (.FCx), then there's a Solaris C options -xarch=v9 that needs
to map to -m64 for a 64-bit GCC, I think. But setting INFORMIXC is a
good starting point - and the key step in the operation. The rest is
mainly cosmetic.
Oh, and if you want to make the changes permanent, you make a backup
of the original c4gl, then edit $INFORMIXDIR/bin/c4gl. But be very
careful...and avoid reporting problems to Tech Support that can't be
reproduced with the Solaris C compiler.
