You might change your LRU_MIN_DIRTY/LRU_MAX_DIRTY to 1/2 Before you do that how many buffers do you have? We tend to make BUFFERS/LRU's=1000 as a starting point. We do CLEANERS=LRUS as well. Then if there are still issues we tweak the numbers till we see what we like. Upgrading to 9.2 should also alleviate your checkpoint issues.
