Is this really NOT a feature of Informix????

I have been trying to do a join on two tables which I did not create. The tables contain lists of chemical names. I want find the names which match both tables and update a field in one table from matching data from the other table. Following me so far. One of the tables has its chemical names all in upper case. The other table has the names in both lower and upper case. eg Table 1 Chemical # Chemical # Arsenic 123 ARSENIC Lead 345 LEAD Chlorine 777 CHLORINE I want to join them together and add the data from the # field of table 1 to the # field for table 2 whenever there is a match. After the update, Table 2 should look like this ..... Chemical # ARSENIC 123 LEAD 456 CHLORINE 777 The problem is that Informix does not seem to have the ignore case feature? Is this really true or was the guy at technical support wrong? I can not believe this feature does not exist. IMHO, this is a very important feature that should come as a basic package. It's like buying a car and finding out it does not come with windshield wipers. And to put them on would be time consuming and costly. As a new user to Informix, could someone tell me what other basic features does this software lack? Are there other glaring limitations with Informix. I have the SQL ver. 4.1.1, SE ver. 5.01. It runs on a sparc10. Does anyone have a solution to my problem of joining these two fields. Altering the original data is out of the question as the lists are hundred and/or thousands of records long. Thanks in advance Bonnie weller@zorro.cecer.army.mil
