Re: INFORMIXDIR location

I *never* put *anything* on the system disk unless there's no choice whatsoever. It makes life easier as each new version of whatever the flavour of UNIX is running arrives and is larger than the previous. I also make sure that $DBTEMP points somewhere other than /tmp. But these days with very large hard disks (2GB compared with the 660MB I remember) there is more disk & fewer spindles. This makes spreading the load out harder. We ran a system with 4GB data in SE7.23 on a Solaris machine where all the disk space (10GB) apart from the system disk was in one hugh stripped set. It performed just fine so far as we were concerned. They are now using Online 7.23, just about to put 7.30 on their machine. And yes - it is faster! In article <6s3t6v$2gh$1@news.xmission.com>, Bill Weaver <billw@fscorp.com> writes > >In the past, our INFORMIXDIR was always set to /usr/informix meaning that it was >on the root >drive and partition (our version of unix combines root and /usr in the same >partition, some >don't). Does it make better sense to put the stuff in INFORMIXDIR on another >mounted filesystem >so that it won't be "contending" for the drive with the OS? Or is there really >no significant >difference?
