PeopleSoft on Informix
Posted in 2015
A user reported that Oracle/PeopleSoft documentation (PeopleTools 8.55 and a support tech note) states Informix will no longer be supported as a PeopleSoft database, and asked whether IBM might get Oracle to reverse course. No technical fix emerged: Art Kagel suggested affected PeopleSoft/Informix customers band together and lobby Oracle directly, while Fernando Nunes (speaking personally, not for IBM) explained that de-support is the application vendor's commercial decision, noted Oracle still supports Informix with WebLogic/ODI, and was skeptical lobbying would succeed. No resolution recorded.

Wondering if anyone from IBM can comment on Oracle's decision to no longer support Informix as noted in the attached PDF? I know this was rumored a couple of years ago. Just curious if IBM is working on attempting to have Oracle continue to support Informix. Thanks in advance for any information .... Peter Logan Database Administrator SpartanNash INC. Peter, you can't add attachments to forum posts, they never get through. If you have a link to the announcement online that would be good, or paste in the text into the post itself. Art Art S. Most unfortunate. What you need to do is to get together with other Peoplesoft/Informix users and complain directly to Oracle/Peoplesoft as a group. Art Art S. Although I'm from IBM, my comment MUST NOT be taken as an IBM position or statement. I have no authority to do that. This is just my personal thoughts. Whenever an application vendor decides do de-support a database that's their own decision. In theory the database vendor could possible try to avoid that if it assumed the costs of that support... which of course could make some sense, but those costs would have to be mapped in money and a ROI would have to be calculated and there's also the question on who calculates those costs... And then, when the application vendors are also database vendors, the picture becomes even more complex.... Oracle considers that there are not enough customer to justify support for Informix on peopleSoft, but it supports Informix for WebLogic and ODI for example...I suppose only they have the numbers that can justify this. In the end, it's the customer that suffers. Assuming they feel confortable with their current database, a change always means some "pain". Oracle and SAP should know by now this... SAP lost some customers because some of the ones who were forced to change from Informix started by changing the database and eventually changed SAP also for Oracle applications following some generous offer from Oracle. Oracle may of course expect these customers will move to Oracle database. And the risk of loosing the application side of things is deduced for informix customers. it may not be the case for Sybase customers.... since Sybase now belongs to SAP they may provide a "different solution" to their Sybase/Peoplesoft customers.... Art's suggestion seems the way to go... although after seeing what Oracle attempted with itanium, I doubt it will work.... Regards.
