Don't have to qualify to be a newbie . . . . it comes naturally . .

Great!

Some important Informix variables to consider:
$INFORMIXSERVER -- points to the current Informix instance
$INFORMIXDIR -- corresponds to $ORACLE_HOME
$ONCONFIG -- corresponds to $?????? in Oracle -- the ONCONFIG
variable points to the configuration file currently active for a given
Informix instance.
To see where the log file is:
vi $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG -- look for MSGPATH
tail $INFORMIXDIR/etc/"filename_corresponding_to_MSGPATH"

Physical / logical log / shared memory parametersf -- that information
would be listed in the ONCONFIG file.
Dbspace -- you add chunks (datafiles) using the 'onspaces' command.

If possible, check out the Informix admin class for Oracle DBAs. Of
course, training dollars are a bit scarce these days . . . . .
