Backing Up IDS on NT using Veritas

I have IIF.2000 running on NT/Server 4.0. We will be using Veritas as our backup storage manager. Veritas has an agent that will work with ON-Bar for the Solaris environment, but not for NT ;-(. Veritas has a software bundle that allows you to back up "open files" on NT. I would prefer to use on On-Bar but that option is not available. I would be interested in hearing your backup solutions for IIF on NT. Who is using Veritas? Who is using Legato? Steve Romankiw

When I investigated 6 mos ago, the only major backup vendor that supported Informix on NT was Legato (logical, since ISM was developed by Legato). The short version: the basic Networker product installed quick & slick, and seemed like a great backup solution. The Informix on NT agent, OTOH, was an ugly install. Had to manually uninstall ISM, then manually install the Informix agent; it involved various registry hacks, copying files here & there, etc. I was keeping notes of the setup process, one of my goals being to document the whole shebang in case I get hit by a bus & one of my coworkers has to rebuild the server from scratch. By the fourth page of single-spaced handwritten notes for this one little ol' software component, I began to question whether the benefits of using Networker outweighed the complexity & fragility of the installation process. In the end I decided to stick with my original kludge solution: I let OnBAR/ISM do a level 1 backup to disk files every night, then have "brand X" non-Informix-aware backup software come along an hour later and back it all up to tape. It ain't pretty but it's reliable and straightforward to configure. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
