remote connection question

I have two unix boxes each running an instance of an Informix database (one production the other development). I would like to be able to access the development instance remotely from the production server. What do I need to set up in order to do that? They are already "trusted" between each other. Do I need to install I-Connect on one or both of the servers? Can this be done simply with the proper sqlhosts entries (and/or various other entries)? I know I can reference the other server by setting INFORMIXSERVER, what about the ONCONFIG and SQLHOSTS environment variables? Should they change?
