External Restore Issue

I am attempting to bring up an instance from one server onto another server
without using an archive. Instead, I brought the "from" server down with
onmode -ky, then ftp'd (bin) the flat files from one SAN to the SAN on the"to" server.
On the "from" server, the chunks are listed as:
Chunks
address chunk/dbs offset size free bpages flags pathname
4b8a3960 1 1 0 1000000 938769 PO-- /IFXchunks/chunk01
4b971d90 2 2 0 1000000 999947 PO-- /IFXchunks/chunk02
4b8a3b78 3 3 0 5000000 3598717 PO-B /IFXchunks/chunk03
4b8a3d48 4 4 0 250000000 0 15625000 POBB /IFXchunks/chunk04
4c520018 5 4 0 250000000 0 15625000 POBB /IFXchunks/chunk05
4c5201e8 6 5 0 1000000 665565 PO-- /IFXchunks/chunk06
4c5203b8 7 6 0 250000000 10133851 15625000 POBB /IFXchunks/chunk07
4c520588 8 4 0 250000000 6664980 15625000 POBB /IFXchunks/chunk08
8 active, 32766 maximum
Because those chunk names are not very descriptive, I would like to rename
those chunks; thus, the following RenameChunks.lst file:
/IFXchunks/chunk01 0 /IFXchunks/chkrootdbs01 0
/IFXchunks/chunk02 0 /IFXchunks/chktempdbs01 0
/IFXchunks/chunk03 0 /IFXchunks/chkimagesdbs01 0
/IFXchunks/chunk04 0 /IFXchunks/chkimagesblob01 0
/IFXchunks/chunk05 0 /IFXchunks/chkimagesblob02 0
/IFXchunks/chunk06 0 /IFXchunks/chktcimagesdbs01 0
/IFXchunks/chunk07 0 /IFXchunks/chktcimagesblob01 0
/IFXchunks/chunk08 0 /IFXchunks/chkimagesblob03 0
At the disk level, the above "to" names are the symbolic links to the flat
files ftp'd over:
</IFXchunks>
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 21 Dec 4 10:18 chkrootdbs01 ->
/array01/chkrootdbs01
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 21 Dec 4 10:20 chktempdbs01 ->
/array01/chktempdbs01
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 23 Dec 4 10:21 chkimagesdbs01 ->
/array01/chkimagesdbs01
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 24 Dec 4 10:21 chkimagesblob01 ->
/array01/chkimagesblob01
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 24 Dec 4 10:22 chkimagesblob02 ->
/array01/chkimagesblob02
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 24 Dec 4 10:23 chkimagesblob03 ->
/array02/chkimagesblob03
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 25 Dec 4 10:23 chktcimagesdbs01 ->
/array02/chktcimagesdbs01
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 26 Dec 4 10:27 chktcimagesblob01 ->
/array02/chktcimagesblob01
The flat files themselves had the same "chunk??" names listed above; thus, I
changed their names to the chk* names listed above in the various arrays I had
to store them within.
I have copied over the $ONCONFIG file from the "from" server.
I have modified the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file to contain the
DBSERVERALIAS name used on the "from" server but with the server column
listing the name of the "to" server.
I have added the INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG environment parameters to the
right names.
When I try to bring up the instance using "ontape -p -e -rename -f
RenameChunks.lst", I get the following error:
-> ontape -p -e -rename -f RenameChunks.lst
External restore failed.
The old chunk path (/IFXchunks/chunk01, 0) in the input file does not exist in
the backup.
Any ideas? I do not remember this being that hard to do ... but that was when
7.30 had just came out.
Thanks in advance for your assistance ... been a frustrating afternoon.
Clifton

Hi,
I'm not sure if this help you or not.
Normally I use onbar. This is my sample
onbar -r -e -rename -p /usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs007c40 -o 0 -n
/usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs040c07 -o 0
-rename -p /usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs008c40 -o 0 -n
/usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs040c08 -o 0
OR
onbar -r -e -rename -f listfile
listfile :
/usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs007c40 0
/usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs040c07 0
/usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs008c40 0
/usr/users/informix/SERVER1/DBS/ldbs040c08 0
BTW:
Have you prepare new link (name) before running command ? i.e You must have
/IFXchunks/chunk01 and /IFXchunks/chkrootdbs01 (may be a link ,pointing into
the same disk)
before running ontape or onbar.
Note: If you use HDR, don't copy disk from Secondary.

Hi,
if you have copied all the low level chunks 1:1, you can just bring up
the instance with onmode.
Ontape is for restore of an arvhice, which you are trying to prevent as
I understand.
You can only rename chunks when creating the instance from an archive.
Renaming of chunks in an existing (also a cloned) instance is not
supported.
One would have to patch (hex-Edit) the chunk names in the rootdbs (which
can be moved by setting
a different path in onconfig, but that is not very clean).
If you really want to rename the chunks instead of just setting symbolic
links, I believe
you have to go the archive/restore way.
