Row Locks When Transaction Logging is turned off

I was running an update statement with Transaction Logging (Buffered) turned off and noticed that HDR+IX type locks were being placed on rows. The odd thing is that it appears not all the rows are being locked. The SQL runs for a period of time with out locking any rows. Then all of a sudden "BAMMMMM!!!!", rows start getting locked. I ran the same SQL against a back up database, and not a single row was locked. I thought turning Transaction Logging off, prevented the utilization of locks. I'm running IDS 7.31.UC5 on an HP-UX operating system. No --- transaction logging and locking are not the same thing. In fact without transaction logging, the role of locking is even more critical. M.P.
