The cost in changing the platform, OS, and database engine is usually prohibitive enough. When you also consider the cost of porting the data, redesigning the applications, and retraining your IS personnel, your consultant had better be prepared to show your owners some sort of cost-benefit in making such a fundamental change. If you're happy with your environment and its performance, change only for the sake of changing is like pouring money down a hole. Most consultants make their bread and butter on coming into most any situation and proclaiming that whatever you have is completely wrong and that drastic change is necessary. It's their purpose, and it's what they get paid for. Unfortunately, and all too often, it's also a very self-serving position for them to take, and has little to do with the welfare of the company they are consulting for. Good luck!
